History:

Mzia was named after one of the most famous hominins ever discovered—Mzia of Dmanisi, whose remains, along with Zezva’s, mark the earliest evidence of humans outside Africa.

The name was chosen by a group of archaeologists working in the area. The team fell in love with two local strays who had taken up residence near their camp in Dmanisi, Georgia.

Mzia was the playful one—all energy, joy, and puppy mischief. Her best friend, Jonathan, was shy and thoughtful. The two dogs were inseparable, wandering the fields and sleeping side by side.

When one of the archaeologists decided to adopt Jonathan and bring him home to New York, they couldn’t bear the thought of leaving Mzia behind. We quickly mobilized, raising funds to bring both dogs into our care. Thanks to kind donors, we found Mzia a foster home and covered her care for several months.

Almost a year has passed. Jonathan is getting ready to fly home to his family.
Mzia is still waiting.

Personality:

Mzia is now about a year old, but she’s still a puppy at heart—playful, curious, and full of life. She adores other dogs, runs endlessly around the yard, and has been known to interrupt her foster mom’s gardening efforts more than once. She always seems to wear a cheeky little grin.

She’s slowly beginning to mature, showing more patience and calm—but her joyful spirit still shines through.
